Merry Christmas

· Justin · People

Merry Christmas from Florida here on Hiraeth. We had some awesome fog the morning of Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve service hosted by Bridge Point Church at the Mahaffey Theater . We walked back with Sarah, John and Susan. The service was quite a production. That night we joined some friends from college who even put …

Head Repair

· Justin · Maintenance, Repairs

I think nearly every sailing blog has a post (or two) on the topic of head repair. When living on land I take for granted that when I flush the toilette my waste simply goes away. I only have to think about it when the water/sewer bill comes due (or when I have to dig …

Thanksgiving Cruise

· Justin · Places, People

Sara and I returned from our trip to the Great White North. (More on that later.) We were relieved to find that Hiraerth had survived Hurricane Irma without a single scratch inside or out. The next two weeks were a whirlwind as we recommissioned systems, addressed an issue with our head, reconnected with old friends …

Big Sarasota Grounding

· Justin · Places

The day started well. We left Pelican Bay, Cayo Costa, just west of Fort Myers, Florida, at 0630 for the best tides. Our safety inlet was Venice which we reached around 1245. It was a nice sail with east-northeast winds around ten knots. I kept the motor running to boost our speed since we wanted …

Garmin Tracks

· Justin · Places

I've been trying to figure out how to get all our Garmin tracks on one Google Map and I think I've finally figured out how using a tool called GPSBabel to reduce the number of points on each track and then merge them together. Here's the result with a few pictures embedded as well.

Warm Weather Projects

· Justin · Maintenance, Outfitting

Well, since we've finally gotten to warmer weather south of Cape Canaveral, I've been working non-stop on various critical and non-critical projects. The starboard forward knee was obviously a critical project. I permanently mounted the solar panel to our davits. (That's to Totem for the solar panel!) I made a little electronics locker for our …

Knee Surgery!

· Justin · Repairs

We've holed up on Banana River to take care of a knee problem. The bottom half of our starboard forward knee was pulling away from the hull! I noticed it when I was pulling on the shrouds and found that the chainplate would move about a quarter inch out of the deck. This is no …

Ground Tackle Upgrade!

· Sara Riddle · Outfitting

Sailors Exchange was on the map for us six weeks ago when our kindred A30 sailing friends Santa Mojo said it was a must-see! That being said, our unexpected week-long stay in Jacksonville had us chomping at the bit to continue South. What to do? What to do? As we debated whether or not to …
